About David M. Lewin

Attorney David M. Lewin has nearly twenty years experience litigating and advising clients on insurance and construction related matters nationwide. He is an experienced trial attorney in both personal injury defense and insurance conflicts. He is a former Board member of a Streeterville condomimium association with extensive experience in condominium and HOA law.
Dave Lewin represents both sub-contractors and general contractors in transactional matters well as in liability defense and insurance coverage disputes. He represents general contractors and developers with regard to defense and indemnity obligations. In that role, he periodically reviews their contracts to ensure that they comply with changes in the law. He works with condominium associations to make sure that building renovations are done with minimal risk to the owners. He counsels subcontractors on contractual and risk shifting issues so that the sub-contractors to enable the sub to either shift risk or to otherwise reduce it. He also works with condominium associations on issues ranging from renovations to Declaration and By-Law revisions to personal injury investigation and defense to collection of overdue assessments. He also has extensive experience litigating coverage disputes for insurers.
In addition to the transactional and trial-court matters, he is also experienced in handling appellate matters, with recent successes in both the United States Seventh Circuit and the Illinois Court of Appeals for the First District.
Dave Lewin has been admitted to practice before the Illinois Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, the Trial Bar for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and several other District Courts nationwide, including courts in Colorado, Michigan and Iowa. In addition, he has been admitted to practice in numerous other jurisdictions across the country pro hac vice. He has practiced literally from coast to coast, including scaffolding cases in Washington and road construction cases in Florida.
He has taken a leadership role with the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel (IDC). Since 2007, he has chaired the Insurance Coverage Committee of the IDC. As part of that role, he is the author of the IDC Monograph on "Proper Claims Handling to Preserve Coverage Defenses" which appears in the current IDC Quarterly.
Dave Lewin is also a recognized authority in risk shifting for contractors and the Illinois doctrine of “targeted tenders.” He has written and spoken on numerous occasions regarding risk shifting, including at numerous IDC conferences and the National Meeting of the American Society of Safety Engineers (“Risk Shifting for Subcontractors”) in 2008.
On March 18, 2010, Dave Lewin testified before the City of Chicago Planning Commission in support of a planned development. The Planning Commission subsequently approved that development.
Dave Lewin is active with several charitable and neighborhood organizations, including Streeterville Organization of Active Residents [SOAR] and Learning for Life, a national group which helps provide leadership to at-risk boys and girls.
In cooperation with the NFL Alumni Asssociation, in June 2010 Dave Lewin hosted of an event for Learning for Life, that included NFL Alum Mark Dennis and Chicago NFL Alum President Bill Schick. Former Chicago Alderman, and now Cook County Board President, Toni Preckwinkle was also an honored guest at that event.
